Aerogel
Aerogels are a type of extremely lightweight and porous material that are made from a gel-like substance, such as silica or metal oxide. Due to their unique properties, aerogels have a wide range of potential applications, including in thermal insulation for buildings which is what Planet Cool is most interested in.
Aerogels have extremely low thermal conductivity, which means they are very effective at insulating against heat transfer. This makes them ideal for use in building insulation, where they can help to reduce energy costs and improve indoor comfort. Due to their exceptionally low thermal conductivity, they can be used in thinner profiles than many other insulating systems, which makes them ideal for use in areas where space is at a premium, such as in walls or ceilings.
As well as being lightweight, strong and durable, it’s also lightweight and environmentally friendly. Aerogels can be made from renewable resources and can be recycled at the end of their useful life, making them a more sustainable alternative to other insulation materials.
However, the process of making them can be energy intensive, which is why Planet Cool is excited to be working with Dragonfly Insulation (https://www.dragonflyinsulation.co.uk) who have developed a novel way to dry the aerogels at ambient temperatures.
